San Juan del Sur
It is a small Nicaraguan city located in the Southern Beaches of Nicaragua on the Pacific Ocean. This town has about 20,000 inhabitants and is popular for its spectacular beaches, both for great swimming and surfing. San Juan del Sur is just a short distance from Costa Rica and is a great base for travel to other popular places in Nicaragua; such as Ometepe, Granada and Masaya.
San Juan del Sur used to be a tranquil fishing town, visited only by crowds of Nicaraguans for vacationing during the Holy Week break. This small city is now playing a more important role in for the country economy, as it has become a main destination for international tourists and real estate investors. The city location is a main attraction for tourists, as they can have a relaxing time, enjoying the sea, the sand and the sunny days. However, San Juan del Sur is a quiet community that belongs to the locals and tourists love this reality.
Lake Cocibolca or Lake Nicaragua is the bigger of the two Great Lakes in the country, and the largest of the region. It is the 10th largest fresh water lake in the world. With an area of 8264 km², it is the third largest lake in Latin America only, slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca. Lake Nicaragua is so big that it has islands with volcanoes and archipelagos of islands, such as the two-volcano island of Ometepe and the archipelago of Solentiname Islands.
Ometepe, a splendid two-volcano island in the middle of a fresh water lake, is easily accessible. Boats and ferries leave from San Jorge port. This port is located only 10 miles northeast from San Juan del Sur. Ometepe volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, are great sites for hiking, exploration and sightseeing. The Conception volcano (5280 feet or1610 m hight) is one of the most prominent volcanoes in Nicaragua, because of its almost perfect conical shape and its frequent small eruptions. Maderas is shorther than Concepcion, it has 1,394 meters of height, and it is a dormant volcano whose last eruption occurred about a million of years ago. Maderas, however, is a natural park with a rich variety of flora and fauna and is the great for hiking, both easy and very challenging types of hiking.
