Juigalpa, is a Nicaraguan city located in the Central Region of the Country. It was founded within the valley Amerrisque Mountains and a few miles away from the edge of Lake Nicaragua (also known as Lake Cocibolca). Juigalpa is the capital city of the territory known as Chontales, a land that used to be the site where Native Nicaraguans, belonging to the tribe Chontal, lived until the arrival of Spaniards conquistadores against whom the Chontal tribes fought fiercely
Juigalpa, with an estimated population of about 70,000 (2005), it is an important point in the route to reach the Caribbean cost of Nicaragua. It is just half a way between Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua and El Rama port, from where boats depart to the city of Bluefields in the Bluefields’ Bay of the Nicaraguan Caribbean coast.
Juigalpa and Chontales are known by Nicaraguans for its role in the national economy and its archeological sites. This is the region where cattle are raised and commercialized. Mining is another important aspect of the economy. Juigalpa holds a considerable large collection of archeological pieces at the local museum. Many of the carved stones and pottery have been found in the Chontales regions and belong to the former Chontal tribes. The city is also known for its zoo and its patron saint celebrations. These fiestas patronales, during August, are so famous that drives many visitors from the whole Central American region.
