Juigalpa - the land abundant of jicarois

Juigalpa meaning “land abundant of jicarois” is the capital city of Chontales of Nicaragua. It is located in the valley of the Amerrisque mountain. At sufficient altitudes here, one can have a panoramic view of the Amerrisque mountain.

With an estimated population of about 70, 000 (as in 2005), it is particularly known for its contribution to the national economy. Juigalpa is the largest city in Chontales and therefore provides impetus to many commercial and service sector businesses to grow here thus making it one of the more prosperous cities compared to other cities in Chontales. Commercial cattle rearing and mining constitutes one of the many important occupations here. It is also the major producer of beef in the region. Almost 90% of the beef in the region is supplied from Juigalpa.

Further, it is also known for its archaeological pieces found in Gregorio Aguilar Barea Archaeological Museum and the Thomas Belt zoo. It is well known for its patron saint celebrations which is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary celebrated on 15th August. Bull fighting is one of the important events during this patron saint festival. The patron Saint festival attracts many persons from the entire region of Central America. It has good restaurants and an exciting night life with many pubs and discos where one can let their hair down. Juigalpa has a good transportation system too to help one manoeuvre easily through the city.
