Chontales is the undiscovered haven for tourists. It is located to the south of the center of Nicaragua. This cattle district has vast landscapes and plateaus surrounded by the Amerrisque Mountains and the hills of the Chontaleña cordilleras.

Chontales has a lot on its plate to offer. It has many places of natural, archaeological and historical interest. It is known for its cattle raising industry. Chontales is renowned for its bull celebrations which are held in each village of Chontales during the Saint celebrations of each district.

Juilgalpa is the capital and most important city in Chontales. It is a very vibrant city and holds importance from the point of view of economics. It is known for its Gregorio Aguilar Museum which exhibits antique colonial and post colonial artifacts. One of its other attractions is the Thomas Belt zoo.
